Last year the winds were strong in early December. It was the day before the Living Nativity, a live reenactment of the birth of Jesus Christ, and the set was up and ready. It was ready until the winds came through and damaged it. Last year we made due with what we had, but decided to use the summer to rebuild with the help of young men in Rancho Cucamonga.
Troy Abbott and Nephi Saline have both worked to design and build the set. In the months of March, April, and May, a group of young men would work with Troy Abbott and Nephi Saline. They would learn skills like using a tape measure, hammering nails, using a chop saw, painting, and texturing. They used these new skills to construct a building for Bethlehem. “Each Ward’s youth participated, and is expected be part of the build so that eventually each ward will design, decorate, put up, take down, and take ownership of their part of Bethlehem so that the gift we give to the community can have a deeper meaning as they participate.” said Troy Abbott. There were between 60 and 80 young men and young women who participated with their leaders.
As attendees walk down the streets of Bethlehem they can experience many of the activities that occurred there in ancient times. Actors portray crafts such as basket weaving, bread making and interact with the guests for a live experience. Children can witness the special setting that is part of the story of the birth of the Christ child.
Rancho Cucamonga and surrounding community residents, friends and families are invited to participate in this annual tradition. The Living Nativity - A Celebration of the Birth of Jesus Christ, will be represented on December 8th and 9th from 6:30 - 8:30 pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 6829 Etiwanda, Avenue, Rancho Cucamonga, CA.
